With 3 laps left Betsy Saina of Iowa State one of the favorites to win dropped out of the race and fell on the infield grass.
With 800m to go the time was about 32 mins with a lead pack of 6 with Dani Stack of Iowa State, Juliet Bottorff of Duke, Kate Harrison of West Virginia, Jennifer Bergman of Arizona, Aliphine Tuliamuk of Wichita State, and Stephanie Marcy of Stanford.
With 500 to go Stack took the lead and Bottorff followed.
Then with 400 to go Bottorff took off and left everyone in her dust running a 67.42 last 400. Bottorff ran a 34:25.86 to take the title. Harrison came up for second, with Bergman in third, Stack in fourth, Tuliamuk in fifth, Marcy in sixth, Tonya Nero of Wichita State in seventh, and Katie Matthews of Boston U in eighth.
Tara Erdman who came in with the fastest time of 33:10.15 finished 21st with a time of 35:53.48.
A runner also crawled across the finish line.

Bottorff who won the 3k at IC4A's is the first individual NCAA Outdoor Champion for Duke and their first since 2006 with Shannon Rowbury.

Usually distance races are boring but more and more lately I find myself starting to like them. The different strategies that can be played out are amazing. It can be a fast race if some one is willing to go out ant try and hold their pace, or it can be slow and tactical.
I feel that todays race was in between because the time was not very slow, but there were a lot of women left with 1 lap to go.
